And so, I came up with the idea \u2192 sales and internet marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Many of you might ask: <strong>what\u2019s the catch<\/strong>, and what\u2019s so spectacular about it? Well, the catch is that \u201ctraditional sales\u201d is not the same as \u201csales in internet marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Sales?<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with sales and what it actually is.<\/p>\n<p>If I had to give a textbook definition, sales is the exchange of goods and services for money or some other form of value (crypto, service-for-service). And every time I mention to someone that I work in sales, I feel like they take one step back. At first, I thought the problem was me, but it\u2019s not \u2013 the problem is that sales today carries a negative connotation = <em>those are the people who want to sell ice to an Eskimo, and if you don\u2019t want them to work their magic and take your money, you better run<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s where my story begins \u2013 a story I believe many others share who have experience selling internet marketing services.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Internet Marketing?<\/h2>\n<p>I could write about this for days. <\/p>\n<p>But I won\u2019t \u2013 I\u2019ll try to explain it simply. Internet marketing is any form of advertising done online. Simple as that.<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of internet marketing lies in the fact that, provided everything is properly connected and set up for tracking, it can be monitored in detail. Okay, let\u2019s put aside cookies and all the regulations that have been pushed on us in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_2151657341-1024x339-1.jpg\" class=\"fancybox\" ><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"339\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8273\" src=\"https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_2151657341-1024x339-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sales and internet marketing\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_2151657341-1024x339-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_2151657341-1024x339-1-300x99.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_2151657341-1024x339-1-257x85.jpg 257w, https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_2151657341-1024x339-1-400x132.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What does this actually mean?<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s say I own a shoe store and want to advertise. I was told I need to be present in the local newspaper because that\u2019s how I\u2019ll attract customers to my shop. But what about the customers who DON\u2019T want to come to the store but prefer to order from the comfort of their own homes? They need to see ads online.<\/p>\n<p>If I run an ad in a newspaper, how will I know how many people came into my shop and purchased only because of that ad? There\u2019s a formula for that kind of tracking, but let\u2019s leave that aside for now. The bottom line is \u2013 I won\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>When I launch an online campaign on a portal, I know exactly how many people saw my ad, how many clicked on it, and how many purchases were made as a direct result.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the beauty of internet marketing. Ask yourself \u2013 how can you make strategic decisions for future advertising if you don\u2019t know the results of your current campaigns?<\/p>\n<p>And always keep in mind: competition never sleeps, and this year it feels like we\u2019re witnessing the dawn of a new era in online advertising.<\/p>\n<h2>Sales and Internet Marketing<\/h2>\n<p>Since I\u2019ve been in sales for many years, I\u2019ve gone through different phases: working in a physical store as a student, trade shows during university, a period of custom software development, but most of my time has been spent in the world of internet marketing.<\/p>\n<p>And precisely because of this variety, I can confidently say that sales in a store is not the same as sales in internet marketing. Selling insurance is not the same as selling Google Ads.<\/p>\n<p>Some colleagues would say, \u201cSales is sales.\u201d And yes, I can agree that a good salesperson can adapt to any situation. But there\u2019s a big difference between selling online marketing services and selling groceries in a store.<\/p>\n<p><a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_519476794-1024x503-1.jpg\" class=\"fancybox\" ><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"503\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8265\" src=\"https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_519476794-1024x503-1.jpg\" alt=\"Image Sales\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_519476794-1024x503-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_519476794-1024x503-1-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_519476794-1024x503-1-173x85.jpg 173w, https:\/\/kg-media.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_519476794-1024x503-1-400x196.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Why?<\/h2>\n<p>The number one reason is that, in Croatia, customers still distrust online advertising. Marketing is still seen as a necessary evil. And that\u2019s the first hurdle in selling online advertising services.<\/p>\n<p>How do you \u201cconvince\u201d a director to invest in online ads if they view it as a cost rather than an investment? The position is extremely difficult because at that moment you have to be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An educator,\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A salesperson,<\/li>\n<li>A psychologist,<\/li>\n<li>A negotiator,<\/li>\n<li>And available 24\/7.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Biggest Challenge: The \u201cGuilt Factor\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>What do I mean by that? If you sell something you know the other side doesn\u2019t fully understand, it will backfire. If results don\u2019t bring in an annual return within a month of advertising (ha-ha ), you\u2019ll be the one blamed \u2013 the finger will point at you.<\/p>\n<p>Another challenge is that people often struggle to sell internet marketing services because results take time. These are long-term processes, and when success doesn\u2019t happen overnight, salespeople can feel useless and lose motivation. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important for every salesperson to create their own sales strategy and understand that certain phases must be completed before converting a lead into a customer. If you\u2019ve ever heard of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/aida-model\">AIDA concept<\/a>, this is where it fits perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the problem of poor preparation. Take a car dealership as an example. When a customer walks in, a good salesperson can usually tell if they\u2019re a potential buyer by reading their gestures and comparing them with their tone.<\/p>\n<p>In online marketing, 99% of the time the customer doesn\u2019t come to you \u2013 you have to find them. And this is where one of the biggest mistakes happens: contacting clients without any prior research. A piece of advice: if you\u2019re working with a list of potential clients, always do a detailed analysis first.<\/p>\n<p>For example: a preliminary SEO audit, a basic UX analysis, checking <a href=\"https:\/\/transparencyreport.google.com\/\">Google Transparency<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/transparency.meta.com\/hr-hr\/\">Facebook Ad Transparency<\/a>. Find that gap where your service adds value. Calling or emailing someone just for the sake of it benefits no one.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve done solid preparation, everything else becomes easier.<\/p>\n<h2>An Internet Marketing Anecdote<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I could say I\u2019m on friendly terms with many of my clients, so they often call me for advice that\u2019s not necessarily connected to the campaigns I run for them.<br \/>\nOne morning I received a message asking for my opinion about an advertising proposal a client had received. The client was offered ad space on a Croatian portal and wanted my input \u2013 the numbers and the offer looked tempting.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I started analyzing right away.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the portal and burst out laughing. It was a site targeting women, with topics like beauty, makeup, fitness, and so on. Just for context \u2013 this client sells tools. Imagine walking into the tools section of Bauhaus or Home Depot \u2013 that\u2019s the business.<\/p>\n<p>The issue here was that the salesperson who contacted the client did zero preparation. What possible benefit could a tool seller have from advertising on a women\u2019s lifestyle portal? My dear readers, that\u2019s what we call an \u201c<strong>unforgivable mistake<\/strong>.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>All in all, I really love what I do. Despite the constant challenges, I\u2019m most satisfied when I know the client truly understands me. And you can achieve that by speaking in simple, non-technical language your client understands \u2013 leave the acronyms and technical jargon for the campaign manager.<\/p>\n<p>My advice: keep learning continuously. Only then will you be able to talk to your clients naturally and without stress. Also, don\u2019t sell\u2026 well, you know what. Be honest and transparent about campaigns, and there will be no disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, not every customer is right for you, and you\u2019re not the perfect fit for every potential client either.<\/p>\n<p>What are your experiences in selling internet marketing services?
